Hair Extensions

Ladies, do you find yourself debating on whether you should take the plunge and have the hair you always wanted by using extensions? What is stopping you? Allow me to help you make the best decision by informing you of the different methods and types of hair extensions available today. First I would like to clear any false misconceptions that hair extensions are only used by a particular ethnic group. Hair extensions come in a wide range of hair texture, color, and density. Making extensions suitable for anyone looking for extra density, length or volume. Whether you’re blonde and have dead straight hair, or tight wound curls, extensions can help you achieve the look you desire.

Hair extensions come in two different hair types: either synthetic or human hair. Human hair extensions will behave like typical human hair in the sense that you will be able to color them as well as curl and style your new hair to your liking. The same is not true for synthetic hair which does not color or style well. The lower price point of the synthetic hair extensions make them attractive over the typically more expensive human hair extensions.

Next I will go over the different methods of attaching the extensions and the benefits of each one.

  • Clip-in extensions: They are a temporary option, which are applied and removed easily. However are not suitable for thin hair because of the weight of the clips and the hair usually causing strain to existing hair.

  • Keratin tip extensions: Applied by either the cold fusion method- ultrasonic waves are used to soften the tips of the extensions which bond to the hair they are attaching to. Or the hot fusion method, where heat softens an adhesive that fuses to the hair and stays attached. These extensions typically last 2-4 months with maintenance and should be applied by a  professional for an optimal look.

  • Skin extensions: A light weight option offering maximum volume and length, typically applied with either a double sided tape or an adhesive which attaches to a small sections of your hair. This is a great option for someone with thin hair as there would be little to no damage to the existing hair. Again having a professional application makes the overall look and comfort much better for the user.

  • Sewn in extensions: In this particular method the person’s hair is braided horizontally on the scalp and the wefts are sewn onto the braids. The downside to these extensions is that the braids last 4-6 weeks, and are more labor intensive, taking more time to finish and have less time lasting for the person wearing them.

I want to leave you with some takeaways that should help you make an educated decision in your move to extensions. Watch out for shiny hair (in any style of extension) usually indicating that the hair has been coated with a silicone that makes the hair seem silky and smooth, however when you wash the hair the coating comes off and the hair becomes less manageable during styling and is more prone to tangling. High quality hair will always have a higher price point than hair that is masked as quality hair. If you do one thing, please do not short change yourself buying low quality hair for your extensions. Your overall experience will suffer, and you will never truly see the benefits of using extensions.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
